Abstract

The gig economy is continually expanding and now accounts for a growing share of service provision. Consumers increasingly rely on digital platforms to connect with pro- viders who offer the services they seek. These platforms typically classify service provid- ers as freelancers rather than employees. However, work performed through platforms often exhibits strong characteristics of subordinate labour. This article seeks to outline the key parameters for classifying gig workers and for regulating the conditions under which their work is performed.
