Watchdog Journalism: A Tool to Strengthen Democracy?
##plugins.themes.bootstrap3.article.main##
Abstract
This article explores the evolution, impact, and global landscape of watchdog jour- nalism in modern democracies. Several organisations, including FactCheck.org in the United States, Lupa in Brazil, Vouliwatch in Greece, RKW in Poland, Nomoplatform in Cyprus, and the ‘platform beat’ globally, are explored as a critical mechanism for enhancing transparency, accountability, and democratic integrity. From its origins in the Enlightenment to its key role in uncovering 20th century scandals like Watergate and exposing governmental misconduct globally, watchdog journalism has been pivotal in informing citizens and holding powerful entities accountable. Recommendations to strengthen this vital function include supporting legal protections for journalists, fos- tering media literacy, and advocating for robust civil society engagement. This article underscores the indispensable role of watchdog journalism in safeguarding democratic values and promoting informed civic participation.
